| Emmaus Road's motto, Church Beyond Sunday, was born out of the desire we share to connect with God at a personal level, in a way which pervades all areas of our lives. So often, our experiences with religion have been shallow, impersonal, legalistic or contrived. Yet the God of scripture, Jesus of the gospels, seeks to engage us not only as a community in the context of worship rituals, but as individuals in our daily lives where we struggle with spiritual issues on our own.
Our strategy is to cultivate daily habits, especially the classic disciplines of prayer and reading scripture. This activity does not guarantee spiritual growth, but it does leave us more open to hearing God's voice in our lives. Without adopting these kinds of daily habits, we tend to be consumed by the materialism and despair of our culture, oblivious to the sacredness of each day with God.
